SCE High Bill Checklist Before You Buy Solar or a Battery

Use this checklist before signing a solar or battery agreement. It is meant to help you slow down, review the bill problem, and check whether the quote answers the questions that matter.

Check your usage before blaming the rate

  • Look at how many kWh you used, not only the dollar amount.
  • Compare recent months against the same season last year if you can.
  • Note major changes like EV charging, pool equipment, HVAC use, guests, or new appliances.

Check your SCE rate plan

  • Confirm which rate plan appears on the bill.
  • Check whether higher-cost time windows line up with when your home uses the most power.
  • Do not assume a solar quote has handled rate-plan details unless it shows the assumptions clearly.

Check whether your bill problem is seasonal

  • A summer air-conditioning spike is different from a high bill all year.
  • A seasonal bill problem may call for different sizing or battery questions than a steady usage problem.
  • Ask whether the proposal is based on annual usage, not only one expensive month.

Check whether solar alone solves the problem

  • Solar may help a high bill, but it does not automatically solve every usage pattern.
  • Ask how much usage the system is expected to offset and when that power is produced.
  • Make sure the quote explains what still comes from the grid.

Check whether a battery changes the math

  • A battery may matter more when a home uses a lot of power after the sun goes down.
  • Backup-power needs are a separate reason to review a battery.
  • Ask for a solar-only comparison and a solar-plus-battery comparison before deciding.

Check quote assumptions before signing

  • Confirm the quote uses your actual bill or usage data.
  • Review system size, battery size, financing terms, escalation terms, warranties, and roof assumptions.
  • Ask what happens if the system produces less than expected.

Red flags in solar or battery quotes

  • A savings claim without bill or usage backup.
  • Pressure to sign before you understand financing and battery assumptions.
  • No clear answer on whether you are buying, borrowing, leasing, or signing a PPA.
  • A battery recommendation that is not tied to usage timing, backup needs, or the bill.

Next step

Review the bill or quote before you commit.

Energy Rate Lock can review a high SCE bill, a solar quote, or a battery quote before you move forward. The goal is practical: confirm what the quote assumes, what the bill shows, and what questions need an answer before signing.
